Hackers utilized previously leaked login info that was then used to gain access to PayPal accounts when the user reused the exact same login details on the PayPal site. PayPal was able to stop the attack and reset the passwords for the users so the hackers would lose access. Interestingly, as it wasn’t the PayPal servers themselves that were hacked, this attack relied purely on users having reused their passwords. So it’s really a lesson to us all not to reuse old passwords! 

In May 2023, an [Instagram user](https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/shocked-it-was-so-easy-instagram-scam-victims-call-for-more-protections/2844474/) reported that scammers had tried to gain access to her PayPal account after first contacting her on the popular social media platform - with the aim of stealing her credentials and funds.
